The true value of things and what people get wrong
If someone was taking a picture of you, would you not smile or at least want it to look good, and have a good angle?
Different Angles
You have two options of shoes, one is £20 and the other is £60. On average you will only wear it twice a week, both look similar, but the material used is different, with the £60 having better material that would last long and design.
f you buy shoes that someone would consider expensive, but you wear them twice a week and would last you 3 years. That is roughly 100 times per year and over 3 years 300 usage times. So they cost £60, which means they cost £0.20 per use. Rather than something you could have bought for £20 but would have lasted 6 times less, so rather than 3 years, only 6 months, so that is 50 total uses (twice a week), which means those shoes cost £1.20 per use! So sometimes trying to save you spend more.
So people often try to save but might be spending more and "buy it cheap, buy it twice".
Cost per use Above. below time consumed
cooking vs buyinng things motly done/prepping once a week? time spent prepping allows momentum during week. train vs bus vs car vs walking? which one doing the more for you?
Increased productivity?
The examples given cannot apply to everyone, because many live in conditions where buying higher quality is not an option. I was there. So what can you do? Besides saving for better options, Think very long term? How will this help me in X amount of time? What will I say when I'm 2 years older/at point of my goal achievement at this point and advise?
Buy It Cheap Buy It Twice
But let's be honest, you will also be quick to form opinions or at least have a first impression.
After the first impressions, people will form a more solid opinion about you or someone. Then, you may behave in a completely different way, but that first impression is already made and due to the negativity bias, our tendency to approve information that is consistent with our beliefs and reject the ones that are not, is harder to change that first impression, requiring considerable effort, so it's smarter and easier to get it right the first time. This will come from your appearance first, your words and another form of communication, and then your actions.
Going Forward
By forming accurate impressions you will have a positive impact on relationship development with the people you meet. These impressions can affect the judgement of your education or career, with the potential to influence decisions towards a promotion or even recommendations. It might open doors or shut them in your personal and professional life. So, ask yourself these questions:
- What labels do you think people have regarding you?
- What first impressions would you like to make on people?
- What traits and characteristics would you like them to remember?
- How to limit any negative feelings towards yourself?
- What do you need to work on?
- Studying First Impressions: What to Consider?
First impressions are influenced by an individual's physical properties, nonverbal and verbal behaviors, and the environment in which they inhabit, and can be manifested in explicit reactions or spontaneous inferences that are resistant to change and influenced by the motivations behind forming an impression and the context in which it occurs. - Accurate First Impressions Leave a Lasting Impression The Long-Term Effects of Distinctive Self-Other Agreement on Relationship Development
Forming accurate first impressions is significantly associated with greater liking, interaction, and interest in future interactions with new acquaintances over the long term, and these effects operate independently of initial liking.
