Are Your Earnings Actually Yours? Think Again
How much of what you earn is yours?
Most will start by saying 100%, it's their salary. But is it yours to do everything that you desire with it? Or does it belong to landlords, vehicle companies, service providers, etc?
An example, if you pay rent and it is 42% of your salary. Let's say you work 35 hours a week at £10/hour. That means that you have to work 42 hours to achieve it, this is 1 week and 1 day of yours that belongs to your landlord. You work for them for a week. The whole time at work, your effort, patience, so on, all for someone's pocket. That's chain (cdgd3)
It's easy to think of our salaries as "ours" because we worked hard to earn them, but the truth is that much of our income goes towards paying for the things we need in order to live and work. These expenses, such as rent, transportation, and utilities, can add up quickly and take a significant chunk out of our salaries.
For example, if you pay rent that is 42% of your salary and you work 35 hours a week at £10/hour, you are effectively working one week and one day just to cover your rent costs. This means that for a significant portion of your work week, your efforts, patience, and time are going towards someone else's pocket.
This isn't to say that it's wrong to pay for the things we need – after all, we all have to live somewhere and pay for basic necessities – but it's important to be aware of where our money is going and to make sure we are making the most of it. By making smart financial decisions and finding ways to save money on the things we need, we can free up more of our income for the things we truly want.
Easy steps:
-
Make a budget: One of the easiest ways to get a handle on your finances is to create a budget that outlines your income and expenses. This will help you see exactly where your money is going and identify areas where you may be able to cut back.
-
Shop around: When it comes to big expenses like rent and car payments, it's worth taking the time to shop around and compare prices. You may be able to find a better deal by negotiating with your landlord or looking for a more affordable car.
-
Look for ways to save money: There are many small changes you can make that can add up to big savings over time. For example, you might try to reduce your energy consumption by turning off lights and appliances when you're not using them, or switch to a cheaper cell phone plan.
-
Negotiate for a raise: If you feel like you're not earning enough at your current job, it might be worth trying to negotiate for a raise. This can be easier than finding a new job and may be more feasible if you have a strong track record and have been with the company for a while.
-
Look for side hustles: If you have some extra time and skills, you might consider taking on a side hustle to bring in additional income. This could be something as simple as offering to do odd jobs for neighbors or starting a small business selling a product or service.
-
Cut unnecessary expenses: Another way to free up more of your income is to cut back on unnecessary expenses. This might mean canceling subscriptions you don't use, eating out less, or finding cheaper alternatives for the things you need.
Hard steps:
- Find a higher paying job: If you feel like you're not earning enough to cover your expenses, one option is to look for a job that pays more. This can be difficult, as it may require additional education or experience, but it can be

-
Change careers: If you're unhappy with your current job or feel like you're not earning enough, you might consider making a more significant change by switching to a different career. This can be a challenging and risky move, as it may involve going back to school or getting additional training, but it can also be a way to increase your earning potential in the long term.
-
Start a business: If you have a passion or a skill that you think others would be willing to pay for, you might consider starting your own business. This can be a risky and time-consuming venture, but it can also be a way to increase your income and have more control over your work and finances.
-
Invest in assets: Another way to increase your income is to invest in assets that generate passive income, such as rental properties or dividend-paying stocks. This can be a long-term strategy that requires some upfront investment, but it can pay off in the form of ongoing income streams.
-
Downsize: If you're struggling to make ends meet, you might consider downsizing your lifestyle by moving to a smaller home or apartment, getting rid of unnecessary possessions, or finding ways to live more cheaply. This can be a difficult adjustment, but it can also be a way to free up more of your income for the things that are most important to you.
-
Seek financial assistance: If you're in a difficult financial situation and don't know where to turn, you might consider seeking financial assistance from a nonprofit organization or government agency. This can be a tough step to take, but it can provide much-needed help in times of crisis.Relocate: If the cost of living in your current area is too high, you might consider relocating to a place where your money goes further. This can be a big step, as it requires you to uproot your life and may involve finding a new job, but it can be worth it if it allows you to save more money in the long run.
-
Increase your income: Another way to make the most of your salary is to increase your income. This could mean taking on additional responsibilities at work, asking for a raise, or finding ways to earn extra money on the side.
-
Pay off debt: If you have high-interest debt, it can be a drain on your finances. Consider prioritizing paying off your debt as a way to free up more money in your budget.
